What is river watch?

The Spokane River Watch is a citizen’s river monitoring effort organized by the Spokane Riverkeeper. The goals are to act as the eyes, ears, and noses in the River basin to quickly spot pollution events and help ensure the proper agencies respond to pollution threats promptly.

What Does A River Watch Volunteer DO?

As a River Watch Volunteer, you will be the eyes, ears, and nose of the river and its tributaries, monitoring for pollution problems. Common pollutants in our area are often related to: storm water drainage, agriculture and shoreline destruction, and spills or illicit discharges. By joining River Watch, you become part of a dedicated community committed to protecting our river from pollution.

Monitoring the River goes well beyond what is visible near the water. Pollution can often be seen from public roads and walkways. Volunteers keep an eye out for pollution that may affect the river, and submit observations of the River.

Interested in becoming a River Watch volunteer? Join us at an upcoming River Watch Volunteer Training Workshop! After completing the training, you will be invited to join our River Watch program and share observations from throughout the watershed!
